a coast is a challenge

a coast is a challenge:
horizons beckon
and lighthouses call
to the concertina tune of
briny comings and goings
we stand on cliffs
to farewell and to welcome,
to regret and repulse,
in fear and in hope
we who are chosen
and we who choose
seek the mirror of the shore that we leave,
a search for the new
and for the old,
for the other
and for oneself
to dash on the cliffs
or gain the waterline,
thirsty for the sweet streams
of another land
