Live from Freedom Square

“Now, we look to our correspondent in Tehran’s Freedom Square for the latest news on the demonstrations there. Jon, what can you tell us about the recent developments?”
“Thanks, Carl. As you can see, the protesters have set up a big presence here in Tehran’s Freedom Square. Government officials seem to have been oblivious to concerns of the people and are now surprised at the latest demonstrations.”
“Jon, what is the government doing to counteract the protesters?”
“What seems to be going on is a concerted government attempt to crack down on these protests. They’ve got a strategy, Carl, or at least one tactic for dealing with these localized outbreaks.”
“Can you clue us in on this strategy?”
“The government is keeping mum on their strategy for now, but they have made it clear that they won’t be standing for this bullshit.”
“That is some mighty strong language for this situation, wouldn’t you say Jon?”
“These people are angry, Carl. They are not happy with the recent government sanctions and are willing to go to some extreme lengths to have their voices heard. The government is just reacting to their sentiments.”
“Speaking of reactions, how quick has the government’s reaction been?”
“I have lived here for nearly two years without any demonstrations until this recent uprising. It appears the government thought everything was under control, so their reaction was not immediate. The protesters hoped to catch them off guard and are looking to create a game-changer.”
“So Jon, what is in store next?
“These protesters have shown no sign of backing down. I think we are in for another game of cat and mouse. My impression is that the protesters have gotten their act together in a more purposeful effort to try to break down the government. The government needs to reassemble his, um their thoughts before proceeding with the planned strategy.”
“Last question, Jon: what does the opposition want?”
“The protesters have declared their need for a new 78” flat screen tv.”
“I see… Jon, thank you for this insightful look into the recent Tehran demonstrations. Until next time, when we discover whether or not Jon caves in to his family’s wishes for a new entertainment system. Goodnight.”
