We used to play here
We felt our freest in what some would consider a desolate and abandoned place
We’d picnic by the waterside and tell tales of love and triumph
“Remember the story about the boy who thought he lost his one true love to the pond monster?”
“Yes but remember the rest of the story? The girl saved both of them when the boy attempted to rescue her from the pond monster”
We’d drink hot cocoa by the waterside and vow to be valiant if need be
“I’ll try to save you if you go under and the pond monster grabs you”
“The pond monster is too powerful during the winter time but we can make it out”
As we grew older we marked any occasion we could think of by the waterside
Engagements, memorials, birthday parties
Now I’m back by the waterside but you are no longer here
But by the waterside our lifetime together resurfaces in a torrent of beautiful memories
