Cheers To The New Year

It’s been a long road, getting from there to here.
This and many other thoughts ran through his mind as he screwed the cap back on his bottle of vodka and put it neatly back on the shelf. It had, indeed, been a very long year, and he was glad that it was now coming to a close. The road ahead seemed so much clearer now, and it was time for a fresh start. A cliché, he knew, as the New Year is traditionally a time for new beginnings, but this year, more than any other year, it was true.
He’d spent the year laying ghosts to rest, putting his affairs in order, and building the foundations of a new life…he just hadn’t known it at the time. He hadn’t understood the need for the pain and the heartache. But it’s always darkest before the dawn.
Another cliché, he was rife with them today.
He poured himself a glass of water, raised it high, and said a cheers to the new year.
