The sun leads the way, the moon lights the sky,
I see you and I lying in my Avant Garden,
I dream of the day when our worlds collide,
You’ll know we’ve arrived here inside our Avant Garden.
– Avant Garden, Aerosmith
The soft call and response chirping of a pair of young birds filled the twilight air as he sat on the rough brick steps and looked out across the garden. The light was slowly fading but the warmth of the day still clung to him like the memory of a lost lover. Summer’s gentle kiss still stained his lips as he toyed with the half drunk bottle of beer in his hands. He was half drunk himself, but accepted this rare moment of relaxation and let the soothing tide of subtle inebriation wash over him.
Muffled noises came from within the house behind him, but he was only barely aware of them, instead drinking in the peace and solitude of the moment. A gentle breeze blew over him and he closed his eyes, breathed it in deeply and held it. With a long sigh he exhaled, letting the stresses of the last few years pour out of him. Lifting the bottle to his lips he let the beer slip past his lips and down his throat again and for one rare moment he simply existed.
He let go of a past that he’d been carrying around like a dead weight since he was a teenager and gave no thought to tomorrow. For a fleeting instant there was only now.
He almost missed the sound of her footsteps behind him, and if he’d been less relaxed he might have been startled to find her sitting next to him. Her shoulder brushed against his as she leant into him, and the warmth of her body against his made him smile. He felt her hand slip into his and her head rest against his shoulder.
They didn’t say a word, they didn’t need to. They sat in silence as the sun slowly slipped below the horizon and she held onto him ‘till morning.
He placed the bottle down on the step beside him and wondered when the dream would come true.
