beach made me angry, and when I asked my mother why, she answered me softly, like she perhaps always should have but never did, explaining for the final time, or so she said, that I was related to the actor Rufus Sewell, star of films such as ‘The Mermaid Chronicles Part 1’, but whom I had never met, which baffled me as I could not fathom why she thought this should catalyse my rage, and when I asked her again, she tutted and drew an abstract symbol in the sand, which made no sense to me, perhaps because it was night, but maybe because I had forgotten to bring my glasses, which were my favourite glasses, not for reasons of style, but because they were large enough that I did not have to tilt my head to see things not directly in front of me, and of course, since I refer to them in the past tense, I no longer have them, so I spat on her diagram, and she kicked me in the shins, and I realised that my mother had left some minutes ago and I was now talking to the mute on the beach who draws diagrams for money, while wearing steel toe cap boots, and my shins burned and the
