The Big Reveal

Ladies and Gentlemen! Boys and Girls! Visitors of all ages, genders and identities! Welcome, to the Grand Unveiling of the End of the World! It’s a great honour to be here in front of you all to officially pull the curtain on this, the engine of our final destruction, the heralding of the End of Days, and the harbinger of our mutual undoing. I’d like to thank you all for attending, and being the first to be swallowed up in it’s gaping, swirling horror. Yes, folks, this is the proverbial “interesting time”.
I know, I know, you’re all keen to see what it is we have assembled – or summoned, or invoked, lets not spoil the surprise! – but before we let that dull grey covering fall away and reveal our gathering doom, let us take a moment to consider just how we got here, shall we?
It seems so long ago now, but only a few short years ago we were all so unhappy; facing the daily grind with bleary eyes in a world full of nothing but aggravation and the steady decay of hope. So many of us in parts of the world blighted by war and poverty, lives haunted by pain and death. So many of with no expectation of anything ever getting better, and looking up at the lucky few seemingly living lives on a different world.
But even that different world was blighted, a disintegration of so-called democracy, and a social order defined by opposition and division. Wealthy nations, built on the blood of pan-generational oppression, now seeing that wealth ebb way, and terrified of the sun finally setting on their empires. And all the while the rise of new technology did little but destroy whatever old certainties their citizens and subjects could cling to.
But! We are humans, we said, and we can remake the world as we see fit. We don’t have to stand for this slow disintegration! We don’t have to wait to die out as the life is choked out of the world from our own effluent and pollution. We can do better! And this, behind me, it’s leading edges pushed up against the scaffold, is humanity doing it better! We stood up, as one, and said no, we will not go quiet into the night. Those who sought to oppose this moment have been swept aside in a truly global movement.
So let’s all give ourselves a big pat on the back for the work we’ve all done – together – over the last decade. We’ve all worked so hard, and come so far, to bring it all to a final end. So many obstacles, so many objections but now, for the billions of us just to fed up and tired to consider any sort of future, I am honoured to pull this simple switch and put an end to it.
And so I give you, once and for all time, The End of The World!
