She traced a finger down Bobbie’s neck and across his shoulder for the last time, muttering “Clavicle, acromion, bursa…” to herself and giving a tired smile. Just one last paper (currently in her bag) to submit, a one-to-one with her mentor (hopefully a formality) later this afternoon, and that was it; just wait for the paperwork to come through.
Clutching her cellphone and car keys in one hand, she turned back to her seat and with the smooth motion of repetition, threw the fraying strap of her messenger bag onto her own shoulder and slipped her sunglasses onto her forehead. She stopped for a moment and looked gratefully into his one closed eye, before leaning into his ear and whispering, “Bye-bye Bobbie, it’s been a blast. Be good now, ok?”
And as she turned toward the door to take her penultimate walk through the cool corridors, she allowed herself a little whistle as she moved her big sunglasses onto her nose to match her big grin and stepped out into the glare of the mid-day sun and the humid air of the city she could learn to love again.
