Dreaming of Escape

There is only one way out.

You stop and listen and all you can hear is running water. Down the walls? Or rushing along the ground behind you maybe.

There is only one way out and it’s down that tunnel in front of you.

You can see a dim light coming through the darkness, from inside the tunnel. But is it a friendly light? A few minutes ago there were lots of ways out, but you didn’t take them. A series of bad decisions has led you to your current predicament and, guess what? All of them were yours.

You’ve been running for a long time now. But you can’t keep it up forever. You have to get out and you have to do it soon before you can’t run anymore. And that moment can’t be far away. And your pursuers are faster and stronger than you and there are so very many of them.

There is only one way out and it’s down that tunnel in front of you.

You can hear them again now. For a time there were so many twists and turns through narrow passages and staircases that you couldn’t hear the swift whispers of their shoes on stone, the low, determined calls of instruction or command, the barking of the dogs.

And now that feeling that you were running on in here alone through the damp air has gone and you can see the flickering shadows from their torches down the walls.

There is only one way out.

You go into the tunnel with its weird half-light, slipping on the uneven ground. You’ve had nightmares like this before, dreadful imagined journeys racing against the clock for your life. Sometimes you’ve managed to wake yourself before they get you, by remembering that we cannot feel anything in dreams. And so now in the tunnel you stretch out your hand to the walls to check. Your raw fingertips meet rough stone streaming with damp.
