You Have One New Message

Are there are any more intoxicating words in the English language?

Half the time, it’s not even possible to think who the message could be from, or what they could possibly have to say, that would justify the rush of excitement sparked by seeing those words on the screen. And, once they appear, it can’t be left unread – whether there’s a road to concentrate on, a friend to comfort, a school play to be watched…it’s simply not possible to walk away. Even when it turns out to be a message from Vodafone extolling their latest overseas tariffs.

If Hogarth painted Gin Lane today, it would doubtless show a woman dropping an infant from the crook of her arm as she gazes, besotted, at her BlackBerry.
