All Good Things

Don’t you just hate endings? I mean, even happy endings, because after the ending, the credits roll and the curtain comes down, and it’s all over, and you’re back to reality. You stand up, awkwardly slip your jacket back on, check that your keys and phone are still in your pockets, and stumble, blinking, back into the harsh light of day. Ultimately, you’re back where you started. Sure, the story has taken you on a journey, and, if it was good, you got caught up in it, you cared…but, after that curtain comes back down, it’s finished, and you’re left just the same.

Don’t you just hate endings? Sure, you can watch it all again, but it’s not the same. You know how it’s going to end before it’s even begun. It’s funny, that, how we care so much about finding out how it all ends, but when we get there, it’s all over, and the very thing we were so caught up in, the very thing we enjoyed so much, it’s finished. It’s gone. Sometimes you just can’t let go, you cling on, watching sequel after sequel, all of which obey the law of diminishing returns, never living up to the promise of the original.

Don’t you just hate endings? They bring a horrible emptiness that you’re left desperate to fill. Sure, you could point out that nothing lasts forever, but that doesn’t help. All good things come to an end, apparently…and yet, often, the bad things seem to drag on forever. Fleeting moments of happiness are wonderful, and I’ve come to accept that they don’t last, that happiness is a feeling and not a place. It can’t be found, it can only be felt, and like any feeling it can’t and won’t last forever.

Don’t you just hate endings? They always come too soon.

  1. Actually I find them quite a relief. I mean, otherwise you don’t know when you’re supposed to get up and do the next thing.

Also, heh heh heh, “happy endings”.
