A Giant Leap For Mankind

You have to get the timing right – that’s crucial. If there are lots of people about, they might dob you in to the police or the coastguard. The trickiest bit is climbing over the pier’s railings – that’s when you’re most likely to get caught. You can’t rush that bit either, the ledge on the other side isn’t all that wide and falling off it would be a really bad idea. You could do yourself some serious damage.

People ask me what it feels like and I always say it feels like a big rush, a huge buzz – that I feel like I’m going at a million miles an hour, that my heart leaps just before I hit the sea and all but explodes when I go under the water.

But the truth is, it actually feels like nothing at all. There’s no sound while I fall, only a small whisper of air in my ears – everything else goes silent. Even my thoughts. And that’s the best part of all – by the time I hit the water my mind’s a blank and, once I’m sucked down in the depths with my eyes tight shut from the impact, it feels like I’m in a completely different world. I hate coming to the surface.
