Age Shall Not Wither Her

Contributed by on 29/04/11

I can’t remember the precise moment I realised I could do exactly what I liked but I think it was around my 70th birthday. I remember a few months later I abandoned my traditional New Year’s resolution to lose a stone and cut out my sherry habit and forged a new one which was simply this: to have as much fun as possible.

So now I have my fix of sherry without feeling guilty, I wear whatever the hell I like – age-appropriate be damned – and I lean my comfy chair back so that it’s only resting on 2 legs. I used to get told off all the time for this at school until they drummed it in to me to stop. I’d forgotten how much fun it is to sit like this.

  1. Ha, still trying to figure out I *can* do exactly what I want. All women should come to this conclusion when they turn 21, or as soon as they leave home! Leaning back in my chair, though, I’ve fallen a few times, so I don’t do that any more. :-)

  2. I agree, Rivka! This story was based on a New Year’s resolution I made with my 100 yr old grandma – so it’s never too late…

Seriously, I can’t believe how constrained I act, when I own my own house, live alone. It’s like the experiment with the rabbit in the cage, and they removed the cage, and the rabbit wouldn’t go beyond the barrier where the cage once stood. Your advice is well taken. It is never too late! And your grandma is 100 — that is completely awesome!
