after the wedding…

After the wedding
we play musical chairs in the garden,
“It’s only a bit of fun!”
It makes a mockery of our singletons.
A children’s game of cruel exclusion.
Only in musical chairs is the winner left alone.
There is a chair for all but one,
and we dance around them.
Like bachelors at the wedding reception,
how we dance around them.
The dwindling chairs reflect our dwindling choices.
Our partners are always the first to go…
