This Moment Keeps Slipping Away

“Love, I get so lost sometimes,
Days pass, and this emptiness fills my heart.”

He carefully placed the knives and forks down on the table, adjusting them so that they would be just so. The evening breeze caught his long, dark hair. It was a pleasant, warm, spring night and he thought it would be nice to eat outside for a change. He’d draped fairy lights over the fence and he blinked as their soft, warm light flared on a smudged spot on his glasses. He removed them and rubbed at the smudge with a corner of his shirt.

He looked up at the star filled sky and sighed. It truly was a beautiful, perfect night. He linked his iPod up to a small set of battery powered speakers, and the tinny sound of Peter Gabriel’s voice started to waft gently into the air.

He lit the tall, red candle which stood in the centre of the table, so that its soft flame could flicker between them as they gazed into each other’s eyes across dinner.

He sat down, everything was perfect. Everything was ready for the most wonderful, romantic evening.

Well, almost everything…

He looked over at the empty chair opposite him and slowly started to cry.

  4. Moving, sad, but beautiful. Looking back, it proved to be prophetic. Now I can say, the narrator has created a place of beauty and charm, and the empty chair is still waiting to be filled!
