I get the same impression as George; that this is a place that both women who desire something, and women who have the power to grant wishes, converge, and the narrator is the mediator, the facilitator.

I think the use of language is deliberately making the analogy between a kind-of “pimping” and “procuring” by the narrator, but this is not necessarily for sexual favors on the part of the customers, and the “working girls” are women of power; in whatever mythological or religious context one wants to put them. They supply some kind of answer, satisfaction.

For example, if a woman has lost a child, magical power can’t bring a dead child back, but there might be some other way to supply satisfaction; such as, emotional closure of some kind, or a new pregnancy.

That’s how I see it, anyway.
