We're about to hit another 6 week cycle, so it seems crazy that I've only just got round to responding to these comments - either the site, or real life, is just unfolding at a ridiculous pace, and I don't actually feel like I've taken a break at all yet!

Yeah, the tunnel is a symbolic image, isn't it..? But the vanishing thing is a big preoccupation for me... I was thinking hard about the Pied Piper of Hamelin, and the boy who got left behind... That always made me very sad as a kid, and has stuck with me.

Thanks, Pennie! I could really picture it, and there's always a worry that you won't make it as clear to the reader as it is to you, so I'm glad it worked!

Perfect evocation of the picture, and expertly told. I really like your stories that just brush the supernatural; your subtle urban fantasies that leave the reader feeling a bit nervous and thoughtful.

I agree with the comment above, wonderful description of the "tunnel" and what it is and what it means. One of the most thought-provoking images in human myth and history is that of the door, or the gateway, or the tunnel leading to a door in the distance.

It's always disturbing when people disappear into thin air in real life, too. Someone the non-supernatural explanations can be just as horrifying (maybe more so) than something from scifi or fantasy.

I really love your stories, Nick. While you take your break, I'll have to go back into the archives and read your older stories from a few years ago, to get my Papaconstantinou fiction fix!

Best of luck on your upcoming nuptials! Come back to the EW rotation as soon as you can!

This was very cool. I really like the ending! Especially talking about 'the absence of stuff' and that whole bit.
I was proper in the zone while i was reading that and could see the bloke coming out of a tunnel and having lost his mates. Good job man
