Ha! What a brilliant story. It's pitched - content and writing style - halfway between Roald Dahl and Stephen King, and perfectly formed.

To tell the truth, I had wondered whether the Queen Of Alligators wouldn't roll on into the house in the first instance, but the momentary reprieve you give Lucy's awful family makes the end more sweet. Very funny and grotesque!

Thanks! It was meant to be dark, dark, very subtle dark comedy, to a certain extent. I was afraid people wouldn't get it, and be offended by the demise of the poodles, for example. Part of the story is serious, though, as you perceived. Also, I tried to touch on a bunch of those Freudian/Jungian images and symbols of transformation.

I know Nick said your recent piece reads like the opening to a horror movie, but this REALLY reads like the opening to a horror movie. I mean, it's a heck of a legacy for Lucy to grow up with, no? I love this story. It made me laugh.
