My wife and I nearly stayed there ourselves, but the online reviews for the place are almost comically bad; it seems that, in order to keep the Hall running, they offer three classes of room, but also dorms and camping, and a weekend disco for the locals – this leads, inevitably to some clashes amongst guests expecting different styles and standards of holiday. Google it, you’ll see what I mean.

But we stayed nearby, just outside Hay-on-Wye (the town of 30+ bookshops, which is a great place for bookworms to visit!) and we walked around Baskerville Hall just long enough to see the grounds and snap some shots.

I went and looked it up! Looked at the webpage. What a great building, and history, and what an amazing piece of land. Next to a national reserve, too, filled with mountains and waterfalls and cliffs. Great fodder for stories! If I ever get to the British Isles, this is one place I want to stay.

Also, one wonders why the place didn’t stay in the family, and what happened to the family, and why it was vacant for so long. Hmmm, maybe there is something to those legends about giant ghost hounds after all.

This is the actual Baskerville Hall in Wales, the inspiration for the Conan Doyle novel. It’s a great old building that I visited a few months back.
