There She Goes Again

Contributed by Nicolas Papaconstantinou on 24/04/09

“Music, once again, is sending us a message, here.” I say. “And the message is, women are predisposed to rash behaviour and snap decisions when it comes to dissolving a relationship.

Think about it. The La’s sing ‘There She Goes’, about a girl walking out of their life. Why? We don’t know. Without warning? Well, you’d think we’d know why if she’d taken the time to explain it.

Then there’s that song, ‘There She Goes Again’. It’s… okay, it sounds like a sequel, but it actually came first, and hell if I know what that woman was up to.

The Wall has a woman deserting her man when he needs her most – though, okay, granted, it’s possible that Roger Waters can’t be trusted, there. He’s obviously working out some serious issues with that whole album.

Even bloody Aswad. They’re so cut up, and it’s all so spur of the moment there, they don’t even want her to turn around in case she sees how shocked and upset they are.

I’m sure there are loads of other examples, but… anyway, that’s not – let’s not get sidetracked.

So on the other hand, a man considers. Think about Paul Simon. He takes the time to reflect, and consider. When a woman leaves, we hear about it once it’s happened. But when a guy leaves, he thinks of all the best ways to do it – tries to work out how to do it properly.

When a guy leaves, you can kind of tell that he’s trying to work out whether he really wants to – whether it’s the best solution. Women are already out the door, while the man tries to work it out.

Do you see what I’m trying to say?” I say.

“I see what you’re trying to say.” She says. “But you’re an idiot.”

She picks up the overnight emergency bag, packed light because she’s in a real hurry.

“And there’s something you’ve forgotten. All of those songs were written by men. They don’t write about why the woman leaves, because they weren’t listening when she told them.”

And then she leaves.

… Or he’d think I was an arse. But thanks! My influences were that clear, here, huh? ;)
