Oh, wow, Matthew. At first thought you were letting yourself be inspired by Mr Gaiman - American Gods more than Sandman, as it happens - but quickly this piece establishes a voice & ideas all of it's own.

Lovely...!

Nice one Matthew! The story was cool right from the opening paragraph, with Dream Men sniffing hope on the wind as if tasting from a wine glass.

You very quickly detached the Dream Man from humanity with good use of voice, through his hypothesizing over the increase in the Western migration and the reason the man unhitched but didn't unyoke the horses. This helped to give the story a nice unsettling feeling.

There are some wicked, wicked details too, my personal fave being: "...but he was used to long silences, and found that the grinding of dirt and rocks under the large wooden wheels kept him up at day." Grinding is perfect!

And also I felt you blended the creature's internal dialogue with the action really well, there was great flow here too.

One question: when the Dream Man stares into the man's eyes, whose eyes are "empty and vacant"? I guess the man's, to indicate he couldn't see the Dream Man...like unseeing eyes, right?

Thanks for a top shelf story, Matthew.

Excellent story. A rare combination of science-fiction/fantasy, and social commentary, while using the historical setting in a symbolic way. The real pioneers of this era basically had only dreams by the time the arrived in the West, having lost almost everything during the journey. (It's cool how the stories for the "Pioneer" picture have formed a kind of dialog. The hope, the loss of hope, the dream of a better future.) This is a really good short story.

You did it again! Splendid piece of work. Your ability to use words, phrases and thoughts so beautifully keep me captivated. It's obvious you got your good looks from me and not your writing capabilities! Love you more!
